HEAD OF SUSTAINABILITY APPOINTMENT CONFIRMED FOR ICARUS
ITM Broadens CSR Strategy
The Institute of Travel & Meetings UK & Ireland has today announced the appointment of Bernard Harrop, MD of IG Management, in the newly created role of Head of Sustainability in charge of Project ICARUS, the sustainability project created by ITM to provide a single point of information for the business travel industry. Harrop's role will be to broaden the scope of the project across the other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strands, being economic and social aspects.
Mr Harrop takes on the role after having undertaken European posts for British Airways and American Express in the past. He was one of the initial founding ITM advisory board members which established ICARUS in 2006.
Speaking about his appointment, Bernard Harrop said, "I am delighted to have been appointed by the ICARUS Advisory board at a very exciting time for the project. In many instances people take CSR to mean environment but sustainability is so much more than that and requires an understanding of the complex business relationship between people, planet and profit."
Mark Avery, Chairman of the ICARUS Advisory Board, said, "Bernard really stood out as the ideal candidate for the role in what was a very robust appointment procedure. This is a very exciting time for ICARUS and Bernard is the perfect individual with a broad CSR knowledge base to take it to the next level."
About ICARUS
Project ICARUS was established, with help from the government's Omega Fund, by ITM in 2006 to create resources for all aspects of responsible corporate travel and meetings. It offers stakeholders environmental and duty of care toolkits, an awards programme and an accreditation programme. It is overseen by an advisory board of senior buyers, academics and consultants. The ICARUS accreditation assessment is made by the ICARUS Advisory Group - the project team made up of 11 travel buyers, consultants and academics which originally formed ICARUS in 2006.
