60 Second Interview: Sandy Moring

Written by: James Abraham | 18 Apr 2017
60 Second Interview: Sandy Moring
Welcome to 60 Second Interviews. Here you can find out all you need to know about some of the business travel industry’s most successful buyers, suppliers, and practitioners in just one minute.

With a wealth of extensive business travel experience, anyone who has ever attended a business travel event will be instantly familiar with ITM Director of Education; Sandy Moring. Starting her career in 1985, Sandy has had senior management roles at some of the largest Travel Management Companies (including HRG, Ian Allan Travel, and CWT) before becoming one of the key faces of the ITM team.

Name: Sandy Moring
Firm: Institute of Travel Management
Position: Director of Education
Member of ITM Team: 2 years
Hobbies:  Travel and theatre
One Interesting fact about yourself: I travelled by truck from London to Kathmandu, and from Quito, Ecuador to Rio De Janeiro (via Peru & Bolivia) before living in Australia for a year.

How did you get into the business travel industry?

After studying for a Business diploma that specialised in Travel, I went travelling for a few years. When I returned to London, I started working for Trailfinders selling flights and trips around the world before joining HRG to set up and run the migration service for ANZ Bank. Additionally, I took on more corporate clients and business travel became my industry of choice.

What does your role involve?

I try to help further educate our Members, develop their knowledge, and encourage their networking in this fast-paced industry.

What are you working on at the moment?

With nearly 40 events in the ITM Calendar per year, there is always a Summit, or Workshop, or Supplier Academy to organise. Preparing for the ITM Conference is also a key priority at the moment.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to pursue a career in business travel?

Business travel remains a great industry to work in, despite all the challenges. There are many interesting roles within to suit all types, but you need to be flexible, creative, and having a sense of humour is highly recommended!

Quick Fire Questions

1. What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety of people and subjects I get involved with, and the exciting new ways of working that's being led by innovative technology.

2. What frustrates you about the business travel industry?
The speed by which some of the official companies/regulators of our industry take to amend their processes and procedures to adapt to the new demands of our Members and their stakeholders.

3. Where’s your favourite destination?
Too many to name!

4. If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you take with you?
My well-travelled Swiss Army Knife, a chicken, and a photo of my family (ideally, I would like the family with me, but I wouldn't want to subject them to being stranded too).

5. If I had that magic wand and could change one single thing, what would it be?
Stop wars and conflicts.
